Door closers are used in domestic places as well as commercial buildings. Door closers are basically mechanical devices that are installed in a conventional manner. However, the function may differ from archetypal doors since with the help of door closers, doors are closed automatically after patrons, users and residents.

Local building codes in the United Kingdom usually determine the exits that should be outfitted with door-closers. Some conditions may require all doors to have door-closers. At the very least, most situations require them on fire-exit doors. The reason for this is that fire-exit doors are to remain closed at all times, when not in use. This helps to make sure that, if a fire breaks out in the building, the flames do not spread from one part of the building to the other, before the fire fighters can bring the blaze under control.

Such door-closers that are intended for fire exit doors should be fire-rated. Fire-rated devices are tested by a recognized testing service to ensure that they can withstand flames.

The surface mounted door closers are usually attached with the door towards its top corner in the form of a small box. It is the jointed arm of the door closer that is attached to the bolted part of the entire door frame. A concealed door closer can not be easily seen. Since it is installed within the door, only the arm is visible.

Door closers are of different types as well. Some are manual while some are automatic. Manual ones are used widely in domestic areas while automatic ones are expansively used in commercial buildings and offices.

The manual door closers are known to be jamb mounted. They are referred to as overhead as well. The overhead style is quite common and widely used. This has a very typical box attached to the door frame as the jointed arm extends to the bolted in part. A jamb mounted gadget is usually installed in the inner side of the door, making it concealed. It is fitted towards the inner edge of the door and therefore, seems to be visible only when the door is left open as the stored energy needs to pull back the door with the help of the jointed arm. However, when closed, the device is not visible at all.

Door closers that are installed in fire doors have a body that can withstand heat and fire for a maximum of three hours. They are fire-rated, which means that they are tested by the manufacturers to ensure that they can withstand heat and excessive temperatures.

When it comes to automatic door closers, these function with the help of electrical power. In the contemporary world where technology if soaring high, automatic door closers are used expansively in commercial buildings like malls, offices etc where high traffic flow need to be controlled in an organized manner. Door closers therefore tend to monitor the entrance and closing of any area.
