Located on Florida’s west coast, Longboat Key is a skinny 12 mile barrier island drenched in sun. With about 8,000 permanent residents and more during peak vacation time, there is room enough on this island to stretch out and enjoy the rays.

Viewed by many as a private island, Longboat Key is also a fabulous place to live or vacation. There are a variety of homes and condos available. Vacationers can stay at the world class Resort at the Longboat Key Club. Many of the privately owned condos can also be rented during the winter. Snowbirds love to escape the harsh, cold winters of the north and come to Longboat Key for the great weather and fun. If you would like to live in such a place there are a variety of Sarasota FL real estate options.

You can do as much as you want on the island or as little. Many people just visit the island and sit on the beach all day with a good book. For those looking for some activities then run down to Cannons Marina and rent a boat for the day. This is a great way to explore the waters around Sarasota, Longboat Key, Bird Key, Lido Key and Siesta Key. Feel like doing some shopping? Take a trip down to St. Armands Circle and spend a few hours walking around and enjoying all of the great shops.

The Key is basically one long beach. Unfortunately, unless you are staying at a resort or own your own beachfront property, there are few dedicated public beaches. There are, however, many beach access points which ensures that not too many people are on the beach at any given time so it makes it perfect for shelling or just a private, romantic stroll.

The Quick Point Nature Preserve is dedicated to the preserving the natural habitat provided by lagoons and mangroves to provide food and prevent excessive corrosion. This preserve offers a pristine natural lagoon, a man made lagoon as well as mangroves. The Lagoons are home for a variety or incredible wading birds like the Snowy Egret, Osprey and White Ibis.

There are several great places to dine on the island. Euphemia Haye and its dessert room almost has legendary status at this point. The Dry Dock is a great place for a meal while you overlook the Sarasota Bay. Make your way to the north end of Longboat Key and enjoy a nice meal at Mar Vista. This will remind you of old Florida. This old structure has tons of character, fabulous water views and tasty food.

Longboat Key, Florida is an island of pristine beauty. It offers visitors and residents a luxurious and relaxing separation from the daily grind. Located out of the area that has been affected by the oil spill, this island paradise is the perfect destination for families or romance.
